Cable Television has come a long way in the past few decades. Most American households now have access to at least one cable system in their area. Many families now routinely subscribe to cable TV services so that they can watch at least one premium cable network. And now it is routine for premium cable networks to produce their own shows. Showtime really pioneered the original programming format with shows like Stargate in the 1990s but now almost all the premium networks offer at least one highly original genre TV show.
Starz is no different in that respect. Starz was originally founded by Encore Movie Group, which owned the old Encore cable channel. Encore launched Starz in 1994 to show premium movies (as opposed to the older movies that Encore was showing). Now renamed Starz Entertainment Group the company offers several cable channels. But Starz is considered to be the flagship cable channel by most people.
Starz launched its first ever original programming TV show, “Crash”, in 2008. They have since gone on to launch the very successful and popular “Spartacus” franchise.
