Every year new writers are given the opportunity to prove their skills at telling great stories. But most writing competitions are self-funded or are supported by fees from the entrants. Usually only adults enter those competitions. Here is an example of a national competition for young writers who are still in school, particularly high school. These writers are still honing their skills but a very small percentage of them may be almost ready to face real world publishing opportunities.
This article is not really about science fiction and fantasy. However I think it’s important to recognize the hard work of high school students who entered a writing competition sponsored by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are among the most prestigious competitions that American high school seniors can participate in. Who knows?
